Oily skin resists the signs of aging for longer but excessive oil can impact on skin health.

Many people think that their skin is oily when the skin shows only a few of the signs. Therapists will often have a tough time in convincing a client that stripping their skin is not the best approach.

Healthy microbes on your skin consume excess oil and these beneficial bacteria need to be nurtured. Below are some of the symptoms to look out for in genuinely oily skin.

Diagnostic Clues

Diagnostic Clues:

  • Slight thickening of the skin with open pores
  • Doesn’t hold make-up well
  • Comedones (Blackheads)
  • Excessive sebaceous secretions
  • Tendency towards blemishes and congestion

Possible Causes

Possible Causes:

Here are some of the factors that may be contributing to excessive oil production in your skin

  • A move to a humid environment or seasonal change
  • High androgen levels
  • Medication containing steroids
  • Petrochemicals in the products that you use may be interfering with the oil balance in your skin

important Lifestyle Considerations

Important Lifestyle Considerations

Here are some suggestions on lifestyle changes that should have a balancing effect on your skin

  • Maintain the acid mantle – use pH balanced products (4.5 to 5) and avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Avoid stripping the skin of natural barriers; so avoid products that contain alcohol or harsh detergents
  • Ensure that you drink at least 250 ml of water per day for each 10kg of body mass – e.g. if you weigh 60kg then you need to drink 1.5 liters per day
  • Some types of contraceptive pill use high levels of androgens and it may be worth investigating alternative pills based on estrogen
